McCloud River Railroad   -    McCloud Railway  -  Cayton

The Historic and Present Day
By an appreciative rail fan and admirer of the hundred mile short line, that defied, weather, mountains, time and economics, for the longest time.

Cayton Valley's one shining point in arena of the McCloud River Railroad, McCloud Railway is that it is a nice flat stretch of land, that the railroad didn't use. It tends to be marshy after the winter snows and that made it unusable for the McCloud. It does however run deep in cattle in the summer months and is the location for a non-lumber associated point of business on the railroad, that is diatomaceous earth loading. Millions of years ago , billions of these little diatom creatures where swimming in the sea that covered this land, when they died, their little bodies sunk to the bottom and piled up. Millions of years later, it turns out that these little critter's left overs are good filtering the water we all love to drink these days, thus an industry was born.
